Dee Reese and Nekisa Cooper made Pariah for 500K and shot it in under 3 weeks. I believe it is 11 days…based on my notes.
Why is it that when Lucas says “Ya’ll need to come off the plantation and see this film”, did it garner the kind of press and conversation?
Cooper and Reese flipped a fucking miracle. Black girls being intimate on screen? Black girls demanding to be treated like human beings on screen?
Shiit gina. Even straight Black women don’t have sex on the silver screen, unless it is underscoring pre-existing stereotypes…See Halle Berry in “Monsters Ball.” Let alone queer ones…o.0
Yes the films Pariah and Red Tails are different. But there is something to be said for fundraising as a Black girl, making your shit AND going to Hollywood…delaying your crews paychecks so the project can live.
Lucas could have used his platform to say something else gina. I am not saying that he should have, accepting people for who they are is how I stay sane. I am just saying…him saying something else about the state of Black films and his social location as an affluent white man or something about films featuring Black subjectivities could have created space for a whole other conversation…But thats all G…#allcity will create the space.
